Most important vitamins
One of the best known and most important vitamins is vitamin D3. Vitamin D has numerous health benefits, for example in the areas of the immune system, muscles, teeth and bones. Vitamin D plays an important role in the absorption of calcium.
Less known, but just as important, is vitamin K2. In addition to its role in blood clotting, among other things, vitamin K provides calcium transport to the bones, helping to maintain strong bones.
Cooperation
So for proper calcium status, both vitamin D and vitamin K are needed. When vitamin D and vitamin K are imbalanced, calcium can precipitate in blood vessels instead of bones. Which can lead to arteriosclerosis and osteoporosis. Calcium can also begin to accumulate in other soft tissues such as the kidneys.
Vitamin D and K in combination are thus not only good for strong bones, but also contribute to healthy heart and blood vessels.
When to choose a vitamin D/K supplement
Many Dutch people do not get enough vitamin D, especially during the winter months. Our bodies make vitamin D under the influence of the sun, which is not always sufficiently present in the northern hemisphere. Also, the ability to produce vitamin D decreases with age. Taking a supplement with vitamin D then makes sense.
Sources
Vitamin K is found in green vegetables, dairy products and can also be found in eggs. If you eat a varied and healthy diet, you will generally get enough vitamin K. Certain medications can cause long-term vitamin K deficiency. If you think you are not getting enough vitamin K, it is important to also take a vitamin K supplement. Individuals taking anticoagulants (coumarin derivatives) should not take high doses of vitamin K by means of dietary supplements without consulting the doctor.
Vitamin D and K combination
Because a good ratio of vitamin D and vitamin K is important, a ready-to-use vitamin D/K supplement can help. Quality combination supplements provide optimal levels of both vitamins by offering the right amounts in the right absorption form.
