The thyroid is an important organ with many essential functions: in the production of energy, in metabolic processes and the maintenance of proper body temperature. Necessary in growth, development and recovery processes and affecting heart rate.

The Thyroid Gland (glandula thyroidea)

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped organ in the neck, located in front of the trachea (trachea) and just below the larynx (larynx). It consists of 2 lobes connected to each other. Within these lobes are small vesicles, the follicles, where the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodoethyronine (T3) are stored and secreted into the blood when needed.

the thyroidThe production and release of thyroid hormones is regulated in the brain by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.

If it appears that there are too few thyroid hormones in the body, the hypothalamus makes the hormone TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone) to then stimulate the pituitary gland to make the hormone TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). TSH causes T4 and T3 to be produced.

The concentration of T4 is by far the greatest. T4 is inactive and T3 is the active thyroid hormone. T4, thyroxine, consists of tyrosine and 4 atoms of iodine, and to convert T4 to T3, one atom iodine is taken off by the liver and kidneys. This process requires selenium.

Regulation Calcium

In addition, the hormone calcitonin is made in the thyroid gland. This hormone causes the calcium concentration in the blood to decrease.

The parathormone (PTH) is produced by the parathyroid glands and has an opposite effect (antagonist), it makes the blood calcium concentration rise.

The thyroid gland is the body's largest endocrine gland. An endocrine gland is an organ (glandular tissue) that secretes hormones that are absorbed directly by the blood and transported to organs and tissue in the body.

Functions of the thyroid gland

The thyroid gland has many important functions: it stimulates the production of energy, is essential for metabolic processes, has a role in thermoregulation, it is necessary for growth, development and regeneration and affects heart rate.
