The Thyroid Gland (glandula thyroidea)
The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped organ in the neck, located in front of the trachea (trachea) and just below the larynx (larynx). It consists of 2 lobes connected to each other. The concentration of T4 is by far the greatest. T4 is inactive and T3 is the active thyroid hormone. T4, thyroxine, consists of tyrosine and 4 atoms of iodine, and to convert T4 to T3, one atom iodine is taken off by the liver and kidneys. This process requires selenium.
