Shilajit supplement

Health Effects

Shilajit has been used for over 4000 years and holds an important place among traditional medicines, especially in Ayurveda. Shilajit is Sanskrit and means 'conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness.'

It is used for, among other things:

  • Libido - testosterone
  • Weight and weight loss
  • Menstruation
  • Brain
  • Bladder and urinary tract

The positive effects of Shilajit on the body are due to the combination of many different substances. The most well-known ingredient of Shilajit is fulvic acid. In addition, it contains many minerals and humic acid.

Fulvic acid has a strong antioxidant effect.

The benefits of using Shilajit apply to both men and women.

Does it really work?

A search on PubMed yields 126 results. Many of these are scientific studies on the effects of Shilajit for various health conditions. PubMed is the National Library of Medicine in the US.

And the conclusions of these studies are very positive.

You can also take a look yourself at PubMed and search for 'Shilajit.'

What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a natural tar-like substance, a viscous resin. This mineral-rich mass is formed from the slow decomposition of organic (mainly plant) material in the rocks of mountainous regions. It mainly comes from areas like the Himalayas, Altai, Caucasus, and other mountain ranges. Traditionally, it was harvested in places like India and Tibet.

The word 'mumijo' is derived from Greek (Ancient Greek) or Persian and means 'to protect the body.' 'Mumijo' is the term used in Russia and Central Asian countries, while 'Shilajit' is more commonly used in India and surrounding regions.

So, Shilajit mumijo (or mumio) is simply Shilajit.

Shilajit resin has a complex composition. It is very rich in minerals, fulvic acid, and humic acids.

Fulvic acid, possibly the most important component in Shilajit, is a type of organic acid produced by the decomposition of plant material. It is known for its ability to chelate minerals and improve their bioavailability.

Below is a table showing the main nutritional components in real, pure Shilajit:

Nutrient Amount (per 100 grams)
Energy 300-400 kcal
Protein 10-20 g
Carbohydrates 30-40 g
Dietary Fiber 5-10 g
Fats 5-10 g
Fulvic Acid 60-80 g (60-80%)
Iron 10-20 mg
Copper 1-5 mg
Zinc 2-8 mg
Magnesium 20-30 mg
Selenium 1-3 μg
Humic Acid 10-20 g

Other Names

Shilajit mumijo is also known as asphaltum or mineral pitch in English.

Experiences

Experiences with Shilajit vary greatly depending on the quality of the Shilajit resin, the dosage, and the region from which the Shilajit originates, as its composition differs from region to region.

For the best quality purified Shilajit, you can opt for a patented form such as PrimaVie® Shilajit or Shilajit from reliable vitamin manufacturers.

The saying "you get what you pay for" applies to Shilajit. So choose quality, not bargains. If necessary, instead of using a normal dose of cheap Shilajit, take a lower dose of high-quality purified Shilajit.

How to use Shilajit?

Recommended dosage: How much Shilajit to use per day depends largely on the individual. Most supplements recommend 500 to 1000 mg of Shilajit per day.

Time of intake: Shilajit can be taken at any time of the day. Absorption is best on an empty stomach, but for those with a sensitive stomach, it can also be taken with a meal.

Early in the morning or late at night, it's all fine. While Shilajit positively influences energy levels, it does not negatively impact sleep.

Maximum duration of use: Currently, no maximum duration of use is known. Sometimes it's recommended to take breaks every few weeks, and sometimes permanent use is advised.

If you're using a pure Shilajit supplement, there are no indications that Shilajit can't be used permanently, provided you stick to the recommended dosage.

What does it taste like? Real Shilajit has a distinctive bitter, earthy taste. Note: just because it's real Shilajit, doesn't mean it's free of pollution. So, carefully select based on quality.

Resin, Capsules, Tablets, and Liquid

Dietary supplements with Shilajit are available in the original sticky resin form, capsules, tablets, and liquid (dissolved). The resin form, often considered the most authentic, is the raw, unprocessed substance that is directly extracted from the rocks.

Shilajit Side Effects

supplement

Shilajit is a very safe dietary supplement. It's not a newly discovered substance, but has been used for a long time by people for its health benefits. The fact that it has been used for centuries for its positive effects shows that Shilajit is far from dangerous.

However, the fact that Shilajit is safe doesn't mean that it can be used by everyone without concern. Due to a lack of research, its use is not recommended during pregnancy.

Shilajit use is also not recommended for those with sickle cell anemia, hemochromatosis (high iron levels in the blood), or thalassemia.

More generally, as with any dietary supplement, we recommend consulting a doctor before using Shilajit if you have a medical condition, are taking medications, are pregnant, or breastfeeding.

This supplement can cause allergic reactions in some people. If you experience a rash, increased heart rate, or nausea, stop using Shilajit.

Interactions

Currently, there is no evidence that Shilajit interacts with medications. However, if you are using antidepressants or other medications, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider first.

Is Shilajit prohibited?

Shilajit is not prohibited. It can be freely sold both in the U.S. and in Europe, provided that the purity meets the legal requirements.
