St. John's wort

The Latin name is Hypericum perforatum but St. John's wort is also known by the English name St. John's wort.

When the leaves are held up to the light they appear to have holes in them. This is the origin of the name Hypericum perforatum: the leaf is said to be perforated. However, they are not holes but a layer of colorless essential plant oils and resin.

St. John's wort is a plant with yellow flowers that was already used in traditional European medicine in the time of the ancient Greeks.

John the Baptist

The Feast of St. John celebrates the birth of John the Baptist on June 24. Around this time, St. John's wort is in bloom. It is likely that the herb is named after this saint, and it is said that the distinctive red juice of St. John's wort represents the blood of John the Baptist.
