What is psyllium husk?
Psyllium, also known as flea seed, comes from the Plantago genus. The plant, originally from India, Iran, and Pakistan, has been used for centuries, particularly in Ayurvedic and traditional Persian medicine. Over time, psyllium has become a widely used fiber worldwide.
Plantago afra and Plantago ovata are two closely related species within the Plantago genus. Plantago afra is commonly known as black psyllium. It produces seeds that are functionally similar to those of Plantago ovata. Plantago ovata is also known as blonde psyllium.
Both plants are valued for their seeds, which, when soaked in water, form a mucilaginous gel beneficial for digestion. Although Plantago ovata is more commonly used in supplements due to its larger seeds and higher yield, both species have the ability to support bowel regulation and promote overall gastrointestinal health.
