Prostate: part of the male reproductive system
The core of the male reproductive system consists of 2 testes, also called testicles, located in a scrotum. The testicles are located just outside the body because the temperature is slightly lower there. This is conducive to sperm production. When it is cold, a muscle in the wall of the scrotum will contract and pull the testicles closer to the body. When it is warm, this muscle relaxes and the testicles hang further away from the body.
In the testicles, 2 processes take place: the production of sperm cells (spermatozoa) and production of the male sex hormone testosterone.
After the production of sperm cells, they are stored in the epididymis for further development into mature sperm cells. The epididymis are located above the testicles.
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland. Its location is below and against the bladder, and in part the seminal fluid is made here. The seminal fluid is alkaline which protects the sperm cells from the acidic environment in the vagina.
The seminal fluid, together with the sperm cells, forms the sperm. The vas deferens carry the mature sperm cells up from the epididymis so that it leaves the body through the prostate and then the urethra.
In the news
For a very long time (since the 1970s), various studies have shown a decrease in sperm count in men from North America, Europe and Australia. This decline in sperm quality is significant and the decline has become more pronounced since 2000. More research is needed to determine the causes of this diminished male fertility.
Prostate supplements
Many use formula supplements with different substances that complement and enhance each other.
Saw palmetto, also called saw palmetto, is a plant with berries that contains the active substances. Pumpkin seed extract contains several phytonutrients as does netle extract and pygmeum and all of which support prostate function. Pygmeum extract comes from the bark of the tree native to Africa. Also lycopene is used for the prostate.
