What are Pomegranates?
Pomegranates are native to Persia and have been grown around the Mediterranean for centuries. Punica granatum is the Latin name, Pomegranate is the English name. In early English, the fruit was known as “apple of Granada.”
Whether the fruit is named after the southern Spanish city or vice versa is not entirely clear. The fact is that there is a pomegranate in the city's blazon. And that there are quite a few pomegranate trees in the gardens of the Alhambra.
The fruit was long considered a symbol of fertility and wealth. Now we value the pomegranate for its high nutrient availability.Pomegranates are a source of potassium, folic acidfolic acid and vitamin C, but most of all of polyphenols. Scientific research has shown that they contain 3 to 4 times more polyphenols than red wine, grape juice or green tea.
Pomegranate extract effects
Unfortunately, there are no authorized health claims for pomegranate extract in the EU. This means that insufficient data on the use of pomegranate is yet known to the European Commission and we are not allowed to answer the question “what is pomegranate good for” here.
What we can mention here is that an important phytonutrient from pomegranate is ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is an important antioxidant. Another essential component of pomegranates is the fatty acid punicic acid also known as omega-5.
Pomella® extract with ellagic acid
A disadvantage in consuming some Pomegranate supplements may be that the amount of active ingredients is not sufficient. A new pomegranate extract that does contain sufficient active ingredients is Pomella®.
Pomella® Pomegranate extract, produced by Verdure, is a breakthrough standardized pomegranate extract. It contains high levels of punicalagins; one of the main active compounds in pomegranates, plus ellagic acid, anthocyanins and ellagitannins.

Pomegranate extract is available from us in capsules, softgels and pills. Pomegranate extract is also added to powdered supplements. For example, in Thorne's greens formula: Daily Green Plus.
Pomegranate and medication
Pomegranate supplements are generally well tolerated. However, if used simultaneously with blood thinners or anticoagulants, it is wise to first consult with the practitioner.
Furthermore, pomegranate juice can inhibit the activity of CYP2C9, 2D6 and 3A4. These are enzymes that break down certain drugs. These include various antidepressants, AIDS drugs and certain narcotic painkillers.
