Plant Sterols

Plant sterols (also known as: phytosterols) are fats present in fruits, vegetables and herbs. Beta-sitosterol (BSS) and its glycoside (BSSG) are the most common of these plant sterols.

BSS and BSSG, even at very low levels, have been shown to benefit protective mechanisms of various types of cells in the body.

Plant sterols are very similar in molecular structure to sterols of animal origin. The best known of these is cholesterol.

Because of this similarity, plant and animal sterols (cholesterol) compete with each other when absorbed in the gut. Uptake of plant sterols is more favorable than uptake of animal forms.
