Health-promoting powerhouse
Peppermint, scientifically known as Mentha peperita, is widely cultivated in England, France, Japan and the United States. It is a cross between water mint (Mentha aquatica) and herbal mint or ara mint (Mentha spicata), the latter often used for brewing tea and for "spearmint" categorized menthol products.
Hippocrates
Peppermint is an herb often found in gardens, but it must be kept in check or it could overgrow the entire garden. The plant prefers a sunny location and nutrient-poor soil. The story goes that the name "mentha" was given to this plant by Hippocrates, the founder of Western medicine, inspired by the myth of the nymph Mintha from the Ovid metamorphosis.
Menthol and pulegone
But it is the leaves of the peppermint plant that contain the real power. They contain active alkaloids such as menthol and pulegone. Menthol is exceptionally useful for the respiratory system, as it helps relax it. This makes it a natural support for the immune system.*
Pulegone, although less potent than menthol, has a similar chemical structure and also possesses beneficial properties related to bacteria. This action can help optimize the digestive process.*
