Effects of Mucuna Pruriens

Mucuna Pruriens is a climbing legume plant found in areas with tropical climates. Some fruits are covered with soft hairs, which feel like velvet. This is where Mucuna Pruriens owes its alternative name velvet bean.

These legumes contain the biologically active substance L-dopa, which is identical to the synthetically produced levodopa/L-dopa. Although the effectiveness of Mucuna Pruriens beans is primarily attributed to L-dopa, it also contains other biologically active compounds that contribute to its action. In the brain, L-dopa is converted to dopamine. L-dopa, unlike dopamine, can cross the blood-brain barrier.

Experiences with Mucuna Pruriens

The long user experience of Mucuna Pruriens stems from Ayurveda. Within this traditional Indian healing art, the beans have long been popular for their wide range of uses.

In Africa and Asia, where the fast-growing climbing plant occurs naturally, the leaves and roots are also used for a variety of purposes. In addition, there the cooked bean, a rich source of protein and fiber, serves as a food and the ground bean as an alternative to coffee.

Insufficient data are presented on the use of Mucuna pruriens during pregnancy and lactation. Consult an expert in case of medication use, illness or health disorders.
