14 Best Minerals Supplements
Here you will find all the essential Minerals plus two multi-mineral complexes.
What are Minerals?
Minerals are a group of diverse, inorganic micronutrients that are essential. Essential means that our bodies cannot produce them themselves but need them to function (properly).
In nutrition science, the term minerals is different from chemistry: it includes (transition) metals (iron, copper, zinc chromium, zinc), semi-metals (manganese, boron) and alkaline earth metals (magnesium, calcium).
Of some minerals we need only very small amounts: of, for example, Chromium a few tens of micrograms but of, for example, Magnesium and Calcium the amounts needed are considerably larger.
Sufficient minerals through diet?
It is not easy to get all minerals in sufficient amounts through diet. A major problem in this regard is the impoverishment of agricultural land, which has been going on for decades, resulting in fewer minerals entering crops. This problem is worldwide and is due to intensive agricultural methods.
Also, the problem of mineral depletion is a global one.
In addition, a highly varied diet is needed to obtain all minerals (and vitamins) on a regular basis. A truly varied diet is recommended for many reasons (fun, tasty, good for gut flora) but not a daily reality for most people.
Mineral forms
Minerals in food supplements are rarely present in their pure elemental (also called: elemental) form. In their elemental form, they are not absorbed or are poorly absorbed and are often reactive.
Electrolytes are minerals that, dissolved in liquid, have no connection with another element. You can find them on the electrolytes page.
So they are bound to another substance. Depending on the type of compound, minerals are absorbed better or worse.
When a product says it contains (for example) 120 mg of magnesium and is in the form of the (easily absorbed) bisglycinate it means:
- There is 120 mg of elemental magnesium in it.
- The total weight of Magnesium + bisglycinate is a lot higher, in this case as much as 1000 mg. Some manufacturers also list this total weight.
- Determining the RI/ADH is done using the elemental weight, so in this example the 120 mg (32%).
