Manganese contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative damage, to the maintenance of normal bones, to the normal formation of connective tissue and to normal energy-generating metabolism.
What is Manganese?
In our bodies, manganese is needed for bone formation and it is involved in the metabolism of amino acids, cholesterol and carbohydrates. A healthy body contains 12-20 mg of manganese and loses about 4 mg per day
Manganese is an essential co-factor for the SOD enzyme (which protects cell membranes from breakdown (peroxidation) of fatty acids.
Characteristics and properties
Manganese (English: Manganese) (symbol: Mn, atomic number: 25) is chemically a (transition) metal but in nutrition it falls under the minerals.
In the diet, manganese is found in grains, teas and vegetables. It is also present in drinking water but in quantities too small to have a positive impact on health.
Manganese in multivitamins
Most multivitamins contain manganese, however, usually no more than 1-2 mg per daily dose, sometimes even less and only in a few cases 5 mg: Multi Basis - 101 and Ortho Basis - 103, both from AOV
So for higher doses, use of a separate manganese supplement is necessary.
