The liver is the organ that cleanses and protects our body from harmful substances. As such, it gets a lot to endure. Therefore, it is important to take extra good care of the liver. Specific supplements can help with this.
In addition to the well-known liver supplements such as Milk Thistle, Turmeric and Artichoke, we have two extra powerful formula supplements from Thorne. See here/below.
What is the Liver?
The liver (hepar) is located at the top of the abdominal cavity on the right side, it is heaviest organ of our body and is fused with the diaphragm (diaphragm). The organ is divided into two lobes and is protected by the ribs.
Galbladder
At the back of the liver is the gallbladder. Each day the liver produces a little more than half a liter of bile, which is necessary for fat digestion. Bile is stored in the gallbladder, water is extracted from it, making it more concentrated. Without bile, the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K cannot be absorbed.
Under the influence of the hormone cholecystokinin, the gallbladder is emptied. This hormone is produced by the wall of the duodenum (duodenum). This hormone additionally stimulates the pancreas (pancreas) to the secretion of digestive enzymes.
Portic artery
The largest blood supply enters the liver through the portal vein, this comes from the intestines and is rich in nutrients. In addition, oxygen-rich blood enters the liver through the hepatic artery.
What does the Liver do?
In addition to filtering the blood of toxic and harmful substances such as drugs, the liver has a number of other functions. The liver plays an important role in the regulation of blood sugar levels. Excess glucose in the blood is converted under the influence of insulin and stored (temporarily) as glycogen in the liver and muscles. Should the blood sugar level drop, the stored glycogen can be converted back into glucose that is released into the blood under the influence of glucagon.
The storage of iron and vitamins also takes place in the liver. In addition, it plays an important role in protein metabolism, fat metabolism, detoxification and hormone breakdown.
