Lactase is a enzyme that is required for the digestion of lactose from milk and other dairy products.
"It is not what we eat but what we digest that benefits us."
What is Lactase?
Lactase is an digestive enzyme that is produced in the small intestine wall and allows lactose in the intestine to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Lactose is a sugar and cannot be absorbed directly by our body but must first be split (hydrolyzed) in the small intestine (by means of lactase) into two simple sugars. Only then can our gut further process and absorb it.
Lactose is present in almost all liquid and soft dairy products. Cow's milk in particular is rich in lactose and contains about 40 grams per liter.
Supplementation with lactase helps improve lactose digestion.
How is Lactase made?
Lactase in dietary supplements is not synthetic but is extracted from yeast fungi. By properly treating certain fungi, they produce lactase on their own. Nowadays, the fungi Aspergillius oryzae and Klyveromyes lactis are mainly used.
Use
Lactase should be taken just before or at the same time as milk or the dairy product. The lactase in the supplement is exactly the same as the lactase our body produces so there are no side effects and regular use, including several times a day, is not a concern.
How much lactase you need, when intake is best and what amount of milk or dairy you can consume with lactase supplementation without a problem is a matter of trial and error.
Strength: FFC
Lactase supplements are available in different strengths indicated by the unit FFC. The higher the FFC, the stronger the support in the conversion of lactose.
Important: not in case of allergy!
Lactase pills are only suitable for people with lactose intolerance and not for people with cow's milk allergy.
