Horse Chestnut (white horse chestnut) (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a fast-growing tree in the soap tree family (Sapindaceae). The species is native to the Balkans. The species is widely planted in other temperate regions of the world because of its ornamental value. This tree was introduced to northwestern Europe around the 17th century. Because the tree is highly resistant to air pollution, the horse chestnut is widely used in public green spaces.
It can grow 30 m tall, but is usually shorter. The tree grows well on clay or loamy soil, but it also thrives in other types of soil. The white horse chestnut can grow up to 250 years old.
