Holy Basil - Tulsi
Holy Basil is an herb from the genus Ocimum which in turn is part of the lipflower family (Labiatae or Lamiaceae).
Ocimum sanctum
Holy Basil is the English name, which is also used internationally in food supplements. The Indian name, Tulsi, is much better known. Tulsi ("the incomparable one") has a long history of use in Ayurveda. And its official Latin name is Ocimum sanctum.
Not to be confused with the very popular kitchen herb Basil which is used both dried and fresh. The kitchen herb Basil is called Ocimum basilicum. From the same family but a different species.
Holy basil has a stronger flavor than regular basil and contains certain compounds such as the triterpenes oleanolic acid and ursolic acid that provide the various health effects.
Holy Basil has broad health uses: it contributes to healthy immune function. It has beneficial effects on the respiratory system and the heart and blood vessels, in addition to protecting against free radicals.*
