Common Bioflavonoid
Hesperidin is a bioflavonoid, a substance with antioxidant characteristics found in plants that contributes to their color and flavor. The name of this particular compound is derived from the word "hesperidium. Hesperidin, along with rutin, quercetin and catechin, is one of the most widely studied flavonoids.
Vegetables that are bright or intensely colored are particularly rich in flavonoids. Hesperidin is a specific bioflavonoid derived from citrus fruits. It has long been used in herbal medicine.
Although they were referred to as vitamin P in the 1930s-1950s, bioflavonoids are not recognized as vitamins today.
