What is Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus)

The Green-lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus, Green-lipped Mussel) is a bivalve shellfish (Bivalvia), a class of in-water-living mollusks. Other bivalves include mussels, oysters, clams and mantles. It is distinguished from other bivalve species by its distinctive bright green markings on the edge of the shell and its characteristic green lip, which is visible on the inside of the shell.

The green-lipped mussel was originally found off the coast of New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds and was a staple diet of the indigenous Maori community who lived by the sea. Thanks to this particular diet, certain health effects of green-lipped mussel were discovered and it is now grown and produced worldwide for both the food and supplement industries.

Many healthy ingredients

Green-lipped mussel - Perna canaliculusGreen-lipped mussels consume a diet rich in phytoplankton and algae, making them first and foremost a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. It contains much more than just the well-known fish fatty acids EPA and DHA. It contains 54% free fatty acids, 26% triglycerides, 8% sterols, 6% sterol esters and 6% phospholipids. Including furan fatty acids and other omega-3 fatty acids such as ALA, SDA, ETE, DTA, DPA and the very scarce ETA. Taken together, this forms a very rare palette.

In addition to fatty acids, green-lipped mussels also contain a variety of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals (especially iron, magnesium and vitamin B12) and glycosaminoglycans such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin-4 and -6 sulfate (constituents of collagen-rich tissues in the body such as cartilage, connective tissue and intervertebral discs).

Combinations

Green-lipped mussel is widely used together with Curcuma and Collagen because of their complementary and reinforcing effects.
