What is Gotu kola?
Gotu kola is a plant of Asian origin, a ground cover whose leaves are edible. In Ayurveda, Gotu kola is traditionally used both internally and externally for various purposes.
The Latin name is Centella asiatica, in Dutch the plant is called Asian waternavel. In natural medicine the name Gotu kola is more common.
What is the effect of Gotu kola?
Gotu kola has versatile effects. The most well-known areas of application are the skin, blood vessels and brain. Gotu kola contains a variety of phytonutrients, such as saponins, phytosterols, flavonoids, as well as amino acids, vitamins and minerals. It is also considered a tonic because it has beneficial effects on circulation, memory and concentration, and mental balance.*
Experiences with Gotu kola as a supplement are positive. It is important, however, to use a supplement that is pure, i.e. without contaminants or unnecessary additives, and in which the active substances from the plant are preserved as much as possible.
Gotu kola side effects
Gotu kola generally has no side effects, provided one adheres to the recommended dosage. With prolonged use, Gotu kola can be taxing on the liver. Therefore, regularly insert a break in use. For example, take a two-week break after six weeks. People who have liver disease should consult with their treating physician before using Gotu kola.
There are no known interactions of Gotu kola with drugs, but if in doubt, always check with the prescriber of your medication before use. Nonetheless, we do not recommend using Gotu kola if you are taking any medications for the liver.
Also, people with a history of skin cancer should consult with their practitioner before taking any Gotu kola supplement.
How to use Gotu kola?
Gotu kola for internal use most commonly comes in capsules or tablets and is taken with meals. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for use regarding dosage, duration of use and time of ingestion.
