Glycine is one of the twenty nonessential amino acids found in human proteins.

The substance is often used in food and supplements as an adjuvant but loose intake is also useful.

Glycine is water soluble in pure form and has a sweet taste.

In food, glycine is found in beans, milk, cheese, fish and meat.

What is glycine?

Glycine is a nonessential amino acid found in many foods and also produced by the human body. It is one of the 20 amino acids used to build protein. As a nonessential amino acid, the body can make it itself, but supplementation with glycine can have several health benefits.

What does glycine do in the body?

Glycine is required for normal protein synthesis, and it is the main amino acid in glutathione, collagen, and creatine, among others.

It also plays a role in the brain as a neurotransmitter.

How much glycine should I take per day?

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) does not provide a daily recommended intake for glycine. The recommended dosage may vary depending on individual needs and should be discussed with a healthcare professional. In general, a safe and effective dose of glycine ranges from 500 mg to 3 g per day, but it is best to consult a health care professional before beginning a supplement regimen.

How to take glycine?

Glycine is available in supplement form and can be taken orally. It is recommended that glycine be taken with a meal to improve its absorption.

Who should not take glycine?

Pregnant and lactating women, as well as those with liver or kidney disease, should consult a physician before taking glycine supplements. Glycine supplements may interact with certain medications, including medications for anxiety disorders and antipsychotics, so it is important to consult with a doctor before taking glycine.

Does glycine have side effects?

Glycine is very safe for healthy adults when taken in the recommended doses. However, taking high doses can cause nausea, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal side effects in some people.

What foods are rich in glycine?

Foods high in glycine are meat, fish, dairy products, beans and spinach. Foods rich in collagen, such as bone broth and collagen supplements, are also high in glycine.

How much glycine does magnesium glycinate contain?

The amount of glycine in magnesium glycinate supplements varies depending on the brand and product. The highest quality magnesium bisglycinate, from Albion Minerals, contains 82% glycine. That's about 400 to 800 mg of glycine per capsule or tablet.
