S-acetyl-l-glutathione, liposomal glutathione and reduced glutathione are the three best forms. Of these three, s-acetyl-l-glutathione is the best absorbed. So pay close attention to this when buying a glutathione supplement.

What is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a substance that the body can make itself from the amino acids cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid.

It was first described and also named in 1921 (Hopkins) and in 1935 it could be synthesized and its structure was definitively established.

Glutathione is found in almost all body cells in high concentrations and has several important functions in cells. To perform these functions, it must be present in a so-called reduced form. In healthy cells, 90% is present in reduced form. It is also a reserve supply for cysteine, which plays an important role in protein synthesis.

Body specific substance

It is not an essential nutrient because our body can make it itself from its constituent substances. Biosynthesis (its creation in the body, all body cells are capable of this) also requires magnesium and ATP, among others. Glutathione is found in the liver and lungs in the highest concentrations.

In people over 40, levels slowly decline. This can be exacerbated by high toxin levels.

With normal use of glutathione, there is no risk of side effects.

More absorbable Glutathione

When taken orally, standard glutathione is poorly absorbed. It is almost completely broken down in the intestines before it can be absorbed into the body.

S-acetyl-l-glutathione, liposomal glutathione and reduced glutathione are much more absorbable. The best experiences have been with the S-acetyl-l-glutathione form. This form has become by far the most popular form of glutathione in a very short time. Due to the coupled acetyl group, this form remains largely intact in the stomach and intestines, so that much more glutathione is actually absorbed into the blood.

NAC or Glutathione?

A substance often used in place of glutathione is NAC (N-acetylcysteine). NAC can be easily converted to glutathione and has been used for a very long time for this reason. NAC is considerably more stable than glutathione and also a lot more affordable.

Patented forms

A number of products contain a patented form. Patented substances in dietary supplements are a guarantee of quality and purity.

Setria®

Setria Glutathione Reduced Setria® is a patented trademark of Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co. Ltd. also from Japan. Setria® is also produced in a patented fermentation process. Setria stands for: Set (Balance) + Tria (tripeptide).

OPITAC™

OPITAC - Kohjins Glutathione Reduced OPITAC™ is a patented trademark of KOHJIN Life Sciences Co., Ltd. of Japan. The company has been producing glutathione for 50 years. The term OPITAC is a combination of the words "optimize" and "intact."

OPITAC™ is produced, in a natural fermentation process, from Torula yeast (candida utilis). OPITAC™ has received a GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) notification from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the U.S.

Nutritional sources

The body can make it itself, so dietary sources are less important. There are also not that many products that contain it: spinach, avocados, asparagus and okra are the best sources. Glutathione from food is not absorbed very well, and storage and heating also reduce the amount in foods. Still, for other reasons, it can't hurt to eat one of the aforementioned products regularly.

Other substances that can help increase levels in the body are sulfur, vitamin C, selenium and protein powders.

Effect of Glutathione

Unfortunately, we cannot tell you anything here about the health effects of Glutathione. Current European Claim legislation does not allow health claims for this substance (yet). More about this on the FAQ page.
