Supplements & Fertility
Although there are many nutrients that affect fertility, there is currently only one supplement with an EFSA permitted health claim.
The mineral in question is zinc. Zinc plays an essential role in many health aspects and is also very important in maintaining fertility.
Is Zinc the only substance important for fertility?
There are many nutrients that play a role in fertility. But currently, fertility claims are banned for all nutrients/supplements except zinc.
One of the possible reasons for this is that the filings contain certain errors.
In order to use a health claim, a dossier must be submitted to EFSA. This dossier must meet many requirements. Some of the requirements are unclear, so many claims are rejected based on errors in the dossier.
More supplements in the coming years
Almost certainly the fertility claim will also be approved for many other nutrients in the future, but unfortunately it is not known when.
