Colostrum: packed with beneficial nutrients

Colostrum is a nutrient-rich fluid produced by mammals, including humans, during the first few days after childbirth. It is often called "first milk" or "early milk" and differs from regular milk in both composition and function. It is packed with useful nutrients that help newborns get off to a good start.

active substances

Some of the active ingredients in colostrum are Immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, growth factors, lysozymes, lactoperoxidase and cytokines. It is also high in protein and low in fats and carbohydrates. In addition, it is rich in vitamins and minerals.

Immunoglobulins, are also called antibodies. They help fight harmful bacteria and viruses.

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein, a type of protein, with many different properties.

Growth factors promote regeneration, growth and recovery. Colostrum contains several growth hormones.

Cytokines are signaling substances of the immune system. Cytokines stimulate and regulate the immune system.

Lysozymes are enzymes that attack the wall of a bacterium.

Lactoperoxidase is an enzyme important in the first lines of defense against bacteria and viruses.

different antibodies

The five main types of immunoglobulins are IgG - IgM - IgA - IgD and IgE

lg stands for immunoglobulin and the letter after it is the type. A specific antibody is produced for each invading antigen. Each immunoglobulin has its own function. Colostrum contains several immunoglobulins; IgA, IgM, IgG, etc. The most common Ig in colostrum are generally IgA and IgG.

IgA is found in the mucous membranes. It prevents viruses and bacteria from settling on the mucosa and stimulates the growth of good bacteria. IgG provides a defense against bacteria and viruses.

Colostrum in supplement form

Colostrum supplements are available in capsule form. Usually colostrum is used derived from cows.

Important when buying a colostrum supplement is to pay attention to its purity. Of course, it is preferable that the cows have been out to pasture a lot and have been raised without the use of antibiotics, pesticides and growth hormones.

People with lactose intolerance should be careful when taking colostrum supplements, as they may contain lactose.
