Chlorella is a green single-celled alga grown for human consumption primarily in freshwater ponds. Chlorella contains an exceptionally high content of chlorophyll; the green dye in the leaves of plants that they use to capture sunlight and convert it into energy.

Chlorella contains many nutrients; among others, it is rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, nucleic acids, essential amino acids, enzymes, proteins, the phytonutrient chlorophyll, echinenone and carotenoids such as astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, flavoxanthin, loraxanthin, neoxanthin, xanthophyll and violaxanthin.
