Camu Camu is a berry best known for its high dose of vitamin C but contains numerous other healthy nutrients.
What is Camu Camu (Myrciaria Dubia)?
Camu camu is the berry of the Myrciaria Dubia shrub (Myrtle family: Myrtaceae). The pulp as well as the seeds and the peel contain many bioactive compounds.
The shrub is found in the Amazon region. Locals have traditionally included the berry in their diet and today the bush is cultivated on plantations. The ripe berries are freeze-dried after picking and the pulp is ground into a powder.
The Camu Camu fruit, because of its very high acidity, is consumed unprocessed only by indigenous people. In processed form, it is used in South America as a flavoring in beverages, ice cream and confectionery. In the West, it is considered a "superfood" and is mainly available as a supplement in capsules or in loose powder form.
