What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the pressure the blood exerts on the vascular wall. Blood pressure goes up when stressed and down when at rest. Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day and is also often affected by the so-called white coat effect. As a result, measured blood pressure is always a snapshot.
Systolic and diastolic blood pressure
When measuring blood pressure, a distinction is made between systolic pressure (upper pressure) and diastolic pressure (lower pressure). The systolic pressure is measured at the moment the heart contracts. Diastolic pressure is measured when the heart relaxes.
The regulation of blood pressure is mainly controlled by the RAAS system, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, this system regulates the water-mineral balance and therefore also blood pressure.
