Provitamin A

Beta-carotene, also called provitamin A, is a substance that our body turns into vitamin A. It is that substance that gives fruits and vegetables such as carrots, mangoes and tangerines their orange, red and yellow colors. But it's not just a dye, it's also good for your health.

It protects your body cells because it acts as an antioxidant. That means that it defuses harmful substances in your body, called free radicals.

Although the name brings to mind carrots, you can find beta-carotene in many more foods such as sweet potato, tomato and also in some herbs.

The great thing is that your body turns only the amount of beta-carotene into vitamin A that it needs. So it's a safe way to get vitamin A. You can also take it as a supplement if you think you need more of it.

But beware, too much is not good either. Especially for smokers. It's best to get no more than 15 milligrams a day.
