Bacopa (also known as Brahmi or Water hyssop) is a plant traditionally, and in Ayurveda, used for its effect on the brain and memory. It can also be used for its antioxidant effects.*

Bacopa supplement

What is Bacopa (Brahmi)?

Bacopa monnieri (or Brahmi) is a soil plant native to Asia with traditional uses in Ayurveda. In particular, the herb has beneficial effects on the brain and memory and can provide support in stress situations*. It is also good for concentration and is known as an antioxidant*.

How does Brahmi work?

The active ingredients in Bacopa or Brahmi include bacoside A and bacoside B. These saponins are said to have neuroprotective properties and are involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter levels. In addition, Brahmi contains organic compounds called brahmosides that are said to be responsible for the herb's calming effects.

Brahmi experiences

There is increasing interest in Brahmi because of the positive experiences reported by users. Brahmi does not make one sleepy or sluggish despite the calming effect it has. Consequently, it works well for concentration and provides balance during stressful periods*.

Does Brahmi have side effects?

Brahmi extract is available as a dietary supplement as a single supplement or in combination with other nutrients as a formula product, usually in the form of capsules sometimes as a loose powder. There are no known serious side effects of Brahmi in the literature. In high doses, it might cause mild digestive discomfort, dry mouth and palpitations. Therefore, always adhere to the dosage indicated on the label unless otherwise prescribed.

Brahmi may possibly cause interactions with medications. Consult a physician first when taking thyroid medication and when using acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors, anticholinergic drugs and cholinergic medications.
