What is Bacillus coagulans?
Bacillus coagulans is a gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium. It is a potent probiotic that is widely used in dietary supplements.
Because B. coagulans is a spore-forming bacterium, it can survive at high and low temperatures and pH levels. As a result, this probiotic can also easily survive in the acidic stomach and small intestine.
It also produces several enzymes including lactase, amylase and protease.
Lactobacillus sporogenes
Bacillus coagulans is also often referred to as Lactobacillus sporogenes. Especially in the scientific literature.
This is the original name given to this probiotic strain in the 1920s. In the 1970s it was reclassified and given the name Bacillus coagulans, as it is classified under the genus Bacillus.
What food contains Bacillus coagulans?
Bacillus coagulans is found in various foods such as sauerkraut, tempeh and certain fermented vegetables. And, of course, in probiotic supplements.
Side effects
Bacillus coagulans is a widely used probiotic and is very safe. However, mild side effects may occur in some people. People with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis are advised to consult with an (orthomolecular) doctor first.
