The Strongest Antioxidant Supplements

Antioxidant supplement

Grape seed extract and Pycnogenol are two well-known supplements. Among other things, they both contain OPCs. These are specific polyphenols that are relatively easy to absorb.

Some vitamins and minerals also have direct or indirect antioxidant effects in the body. Such as vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and selenium.

With our diet, we also ingest various healthy herbs. Two effective ones are green tea and curcuma.

Oxidative stress

During metabolism, as a byproduct of all kinds of (bio)chemical reactions, so-called reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) radicals are released. These substances are better known as free radicals.

Oxidative stress occurs when more reactive oxygen and nitrogen radicals are released than there are antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize the radicals.

These reactive oxygen and nitrogen radicals are called RONS (reactive oxygen and nitrogen species). The reason that they are so reactive is because they have an odd number of electrons and therefore become unstable.

The consequence of oxidative stress is that free radicals, in order to stabilize themselves, seek an electron from another molecule. This process repeats itself and thus provokes a chain reaction resulting in the formation of more and more unstable molecules.

In low concentrations, free radicals play a role in various processes in the body. However, if the balance between free radicals and antioxidants is disturbed, then oxidative stress occurs. This leads to damage to the cell, with all its consequences.

An antioxidant is able to neutralize the free radicals by supplying an electron to the unstable molecule so that it becomes stable again. The antioxidant itself does not become unstable in the process.

We distinguish between enzymatic antioxidants, which are produced by our bodies, and non-enzymatic antioxidants that come from food (fruits and vegetables) and supplementation. The non-enzymatic antioxidants can be further divided into nutritional antioxidants and phytonutrients ( plant substances).
